Vidi beat Debrecen for the first time under the Garancsi era

It took 14 years to finally break the record of winning in Debrecen on Saturday afternoon. That last happened back in 2001 following a good goal by Balazs Beko. The players went out on to the pitch knowing that 3 points could see them champions in the weekend in the event that FTC fail to win at Pecs on Sunday. Adam Gyurcso made his 100th first division appearance against DVSC.

It was Debrecen that started the game better. Korhut sent a cross in from the left on 3 minutes, which Balogh connected with at a good tempo in the middle, but the ball ended up going over the bar from close range. Szakaly received a good ball a minute later, but his volley also ended up going over the crossbar. It needed 11 minutes for the first chance at goal from the visitors. That saw Nikolics try his luck on the Debrecen goal but Verpecsz dealt with it. Balogh then ran at goal alone in the 12th minute, but the forward tried to be unselfish by passing when clean through, but fortunately his ball in proved too far for the arriving Jovanovic.

Sidibe shot at goal from the edge of the box six minutes later, but the ball came off Juhasz for a corner. Loki put Vidi under pressure for the first 20 minutes, but Vidi managed to come through the period without conceding. The game then began to be more balanced in the minutes that followed. The majority of the action was in the middle of the pitch. There was little action in front of either goal for a long period. That changed with a minute remaining of the first half. Gyurcso sent a teasing ball in from the left, which found its way in to the far corner of the net as it sailed above the head of Feczesin. (0-1). That capped a memorable game for Gyurcso in his 100th league match.

Debrecen were very sporting at half time, as they greeted Vidi Honorary President Ferenc Kovacs for his role 30 years ago in taking Vidi to the UEFA cup final. Kovacs was manager of Debrecen from 1980-1983.

There were no changes at half time from either side with Debrecen going close to the equalizer after 49 minutes. A quick counter attack from the home side ended with Bodi crossing to the middle, but it took a great clearance by Vinicius in front of the arriving Balogh. Gyurcso took a corner after 55 minutes, which found its way perfectly to the head of Feczesin, and the forward made no mistake as his header found the back of the net. (0-2). Home forward Balogh then missed with an open goal gasping in front of him. Debrecen started to attack and open up even more, which left the chance for them to be hit on the counter attack. Feczesin then found himself in a one-on-one chance on goal with just Verpecz to beat, but the home keeper produced a very good save to keep the score at 0-2. Trebotic then released Nikolics three minutes later, and he rounded the keeper but his shot came back of the post. 

Bodi then brought Debrecen back in to the game on 82 minutes to make sure that it would be a nervous end to the game. The midfielder hit a nice volley from 19 meters to give Calatayud no chance and make it 1-2. Substitute Kulcsar then hit a powerful shot on goal that came back off the crossbar. There was still time at the end for a dangerous Bodi free kick, but there were no further goals in the 5 minutes of injury time. That meant that the 14 years without a win in Debrecen was broken. The 3 points also gives Vidi 67 goals, which is a new club record overtaking the 66 points collected in 2012 under Paulo Sousa.

This all means that Vidi could be champions on Sunday. That would need Ferencvaros to fail to win at the home of Pecs. Vidi lead FTC by 14 points with 4 matches left to play for the red and blues. Vidi will also meet Ferencvaros in the Hungarian cup final on the 20th May.
