The weather was hot leading upto the Europa League match, but without any threat of the stormy weather, as had been the case over the last couple of games involving Videoton. It made a nice change and helped to increase the good atmosphere inside the Sostoi stadium in Szekesfehervar. A crowd of around 6,000 gathered to support their sides' effort of taking an advantage into the second leg in Gent next week. There were around 50-60 travelling supporters who had made the long journey over from Belgium.

Vidi defender Caneira then sent a long ball forward from a free kick, which Nikolics cut back for Stopira to let fly with a powerful long range shot, which flew just wide. Vidi continued to put the visitors under pressure in search of the breakthrough. Gyurcso got hold of the ball after 13 minutes. The pacey winger then went on a long run down the right before shooting over, after the keeper had come out to narrow the angle. That proved to be the best chance of the half for the men in red shirts and blue shorts.

Gent then had a chance in the middle of the first period. Their wide players were sending in good crosses, making sure that Vinicius and co had to remain focused throughout. The Belgium side also showed that they were a good and confident outfit during the first 45 minutes. Bruls then went on a good run before shooting low with his left foot, but Vidi keeper Bozsovics had no problems saving the shot. Arzo then cleared in front of his goal after Oliveira tried to get in between the two defenders after 33 minutes. Gyurcso had a free kick after Nikolics was fouled, which he hit into the defending wall. Bruls then repeated what he had done earlier after 38 minutes, with another left foot chance, which went wide of the post.

There was excitement towards the end of the first half, when Brachi's pass after 42 minutes, found the feet of Balazs Toth, whose cross from the right, was volleyed over by Nikolic. The final chance of the first period came after 44 minutes, when Van der Bruggen had a good effort come back off the underside of the crossbar. That was the final chance of the first half as the teams went in at the break with the scores goaless.

There were no changes made by either manager at half time. The first chance of the second period arrived early after 47 minutes, when Nikolics passed the ball over to Oliveira, who shot over the bar from 15 meters. The pattern of play then match the first period, with Gent having slightly more of the ball, with Videoton giving room for the visitors, while relying on building counter attacks. However, there were no real moments of danger at either end. Sandor's low shot after 58 minutes was saved by Padt in the Gent goal.

The match then began to get more tense midway through the second period. The match official was forced to hand out several yellow cards. Gyurcso sent a high ball in from a free kick on 71 minutes, which resulted in Caneira holding of the defender to head just wide of the far post. Gent then stepped things up once more, before Oliveira released Kovacs who passed the ball in to Nikolics on 78 minutes. The dangerous striker's shot took a deflection off Arzon and went over the stranded Padt to give Vidi the lead. The goal sent the Vidi fans into wild celebrations as the Sostoi erupted creating a nice atmosphere.

You could sense that the Belgium side would do all they could in the final 10 minutes to get back into the game. However, they could find no way through the solid home defence. The Italian referee finally blew for full time in the 93rd minute, giving Vidi a 1-0 lead to take into the second leg in a week's time.
