NIKO 112!

Nemanja Nikolic scored his 112th (and later 113th) league goal in a Vidi shirt in the league match against Gyirmót, making club history, becoming the top goalscorer for Vidi of all time, overtaking our club legend József Szabó, who scored 111 league goals.

Niko joined Vidi from Kaposvár over ten years ago, on the 1st February 2010. Two weeks later, he scored his first goal for Vidi in his first competitive game, a League Cup match against DVSC. It didn't take long for him to score his first league goal for Vidi, scoring the winning goal in an away match against DVTK on the 6th March 2010 - his second league match appearance for the team. He scored his first league game for Kaposvár and later for Legia Warsaw - his first goal in Kaposvár was against us, his first goal in the first league. In Chicago he had to wait until the second league game for his first Niko goal, just like in the Hungarian national team, where he scored for the first time in his second match. So far, he has made 42 appearances for Hungary, scoring a total of 8 goals. Niko later became NB I goalscorer twice more, in 2014 and 2015.

In the 2010/2011 season, Niko scored "only" 8 times in 24 league games, which was unusual for him, but he was still a pillar of our first championship team. Ironically, we secured the title in a 3-1 win over his former club Kaposvár, with Nikolic scoring the first goal on that memorable May evening at the Sóstói Stadion.

Nikolic' best season was probably 2014/2015 with Vidi, when he became top scorer with 21 goals and NB I champion for the second time. In spring 2020, Nikolics' goal was voted the best Vidi goal of 2014.

Our club record holder played abroad between 2015 and 2020, first with Warsaw and then with Chicago, where he celebrated the title of top scorer in both clubs. After five years, in February 2020, he finally returned home, as Nikolic put it, and became a Vidi player again. Now over 32, many feared that he had come to Vidi only to take a break, but those who knew him knew he would never cheat at football and he had serious ambitions.

On his return, he had scored 87 goals in the league, 24 goals away from József Szabó's club record, and although his goal production was more difficult than expected - in the spring of 2020 he scored five times in 14 league games - in the 2020/2021 season he was again unstoppable and became the home goalscorer with 15 goals, and only János Hahn, the goalscorer of the whole NB I, scored more goals than him. So Niko gave a good answer to those on the pitch who thought he was too old and didn't trust him to help the team with goals. But his teammates trusted Nikolic all the way, and in the summer of 2020 he was elected captain of the team. At the beginning of 2021, the IFFHS statistics were published, making Nemanja Nikolic the most prolific Hungarian goalscorer of the 21st century.

And starting on Saturday, with his double against Gyirmót, he consigned to the past the club record that József Szabó had held for decades. The new club record is now 113 league goals, but that number is almost certain to rise in the coming months.
