Hungary lost 4-0 at home to Holland on Friday evening
Elek: "I thought that on the whole, the Dutch deserved their 4-0 win over us. I was personally disappointed by the margin of the defeat, and also disappointed in the way we played. However, I felt that we began the match well, but we were affected by the early goal that they scored. I also felt that things could have been a little different had we gone in at the break 0-1 down, instead of 2-0. We talked about things at half time, and we decided to attack them, instead of keeping the score line down. Sadly, things did not go according to plan in the end, which is a big shame. I said before the game that too much was being said about it. The expectations were high, taking into account that we were playing the second best side in the world. We found it hard to keep up with their movement, and they were playing their way though us with 2-3 passes. For us, I feel that the three games over the autumn will be the key, rather than these two against the Dutch. I will not be playing in the match in Amsterdam, but the aim will be to give a good account of ourselves.”
Lipták: "We prepared a lot for this qualifier, even though we knew that the Dutch had things to lose. I was disappointed with the way thing went. People on the outside were expecting a miracle from us, and perhaps we began to believe it a bit. We tried but in the end, things did not go our way. The goals that we conceded came at a very bad time for us. The Dutch side, which everyone knows, has world stars in it. They were able to do what they wanted to on the pitch. The end result, and the margin, was perhaps realistic in the end. I feel that Sandor Egervari will play different tactics in the return match in Amsterdam. We will play more defensively, and this side has developed a lot in recent matches, but we are still a bit away from being able to compete with sides like Holland.”
