Nyiregyhaza continue to search for their first ever point at the Sostoi stadium in league games. Nikolics scored his 18th goal of the season. He has previously won the top goalscorers award with the same amount of goals.
The first home league match of this year was played on Saturday evening. The opponents were Nyiregyhaza, who had never before picked up a point at the Sostoi stadium. Manager Joan Carrillo received the manager of the year award before the game, being presented with the award by the hatharom.com editor.
The game started at a good tempo, but the first chance came in the 13th minute. A Gyurcso cross was headed at goal by Oliveria, but Balogh in the visitor’s goal saved well. Nyiregyhaza were very organized, and there were times when they had eight players defending. Vidi found it hard to break through that well marshalled line. They tried to go down both wings and send in crosses, while Kovacs tried several times to break in to the box, but again the visiting defence closed down well. The 44th minute saw Gyurcso curl a free kick in to the box, which Vinicius and defender Szokol both went up for, and the ball ended up hitting the back of the defender to loop over the keeper, but the goal was given to Paulo Vinicius (1-0).
Vidi started the second half in good form and Balogh saved well on 53 minutes from a Gyurcso cross, claiming the ball ahead of the arriving Nikolics. Nyiregyhaza's Slovakian player Igor Zofcak slid in on the ankle of Adam Gyurcso, and it was only down to pure luck that the winger did not suffer a serious injury. Gyurcso was unable to continue a few minutes later as he was forced to come up. Alvarez came on in his place while the visiting player did not even receive a yellow card for that challenge.
The same could not be said for Arziani who picked up two cautions in a short space of time, which resulted in the visitors being down to 10 men. The 67th minute saw Alvarez shoot just wide from 17 meters out as Vidi increased the pressure on their opponents. The substitute made no mistake three minutes later, when he got hold of the ball and showed good skill, before playing a neat one-two with Nikolics, and then finding the back of the net to make it 2-0. Szokol brought down Oliveira after 77 minutes inside the box. Nikolics stepped up and confidently scored to make it 3-0.
That was the forwards 18th goal of the season, which put in on the same figure that had twice won him the award of top goalscorer of the year previously. Those came in 2010 and again in 2014. He also managed to score 19 goals in a season in 2012, when he ended up a goal behind then Debrecen player Coulibaly. There was still time to created chances in the remaining minutes of the game. Substitute Feczesin and Sandor both had efforts but they could not increase the scoreline. The final whistle blew and it was a confident and good win, which the supporters applauded as the team came off the pitch.
Another big match awaits next Saturday when Vidi travel to Budapest to face second in the table MTK.
