There was another Diosgyőr owngoal, just like when the two last met in the league, but the game was settled with some fantastic skills from Alvarez, setting up Nikolics to calmly win the match.
Vidi defeated DVTK in the OTP league match, exactly a month ago on the 28th September at the Sostoi stadium in a very good match that ended in a 2-1 win. The pair met again in the Hungarian cup for a place in the last eight.
The cup match started at a good tempo with both sides lining up in an attacking formation. There were four forwards in the opponents team, while Joan Carrillo made three changes to his usual team for league games. Brachi came in for Szolnoki, Trebotic for Sandor in midfield and Heffler starting ahead of Oliveira. Trebotic released Nikolics with a fine ball after 6 minutes, who headed for goal on the left wing before cutting in on the edge of the box and his cross was parried by Antal in the DVTK goal, with Gyurcso waiting to pounce, but the ball did not fall to him.
Nikolics hit a powerful shot from 23 meters out, which Antal collected comfortably under the bar. The first dangerous chance for DVTK came after 20 minutes. Gosztonyi took a free kick on the wing towards Akos Elek, who burst through to head wide of the goal. Videoton then went ahead two minutes later: Nikolics showed good pace down the left before crossing the ball in to the middle, with defender Debreceni sliding in to beat his own keeper. (1-0). Brachi then did well when he slid in to affect a Bacsa shot inside the area. Griffiths arrived well for a Gosztonyi corner four minutes later, with the forward heading over from close.
Vinicius picked up an injury shortly after and he was replaced by Chakla. Stopira hit a low shot at goal following a good move, with his effort from 15 meters being a powerful one, but Antal got down well to save. There were goalscoring chances for both Nikolics and Juhasz in the final moments of the first half, but the two sides went in at the break with the score at 1-0.
There were no changes at the break from either manager, with the game continuing from where it ended after the first 45 minutes. Trebotic played in Kovacs on 50 minutes, whose close range shot was saved by Antal, who positioned himself well. The rebound fell to Nikolics and his shot from a tight angle came back off the post.
Antal almost saw his parried save slip in to the back of the net after a long distance powerful shot from Dinko Treboitc. The ball just went the other side of the post with the keeper stranded on his line. DVTK were level after 65 minutes. Gosztonyi's strong shot was saved by Calatayud but the rebound fell to Griffiths, who made no mistake from close range as the ball found the back of the net (1-1). The visitors showed desire in the minutes that followed. They enjoyed more of the possession, although they could not carve out any serious chance.
Alvarez came on as an 80th minute substitute, and his first touch a minute later almost produced a goal. It needed a good save from Antal to deny him. The majority inside the stadium were preparing from extra time, and 2 x 15 minutes. Videoton had other ideas and the winner came in the 86th minute. Alvarez showed excellent skill to cut inside the Diosgyőr defence, before unselfishly laying the ball in to the middle for the waiting Nikolics to find the back of the net (2-1). It really was a special goal!
There was no further change to the score and Vidi emerged winners in a very good match. They also managed to knock out last seasons finalists. The red and blues are next in action on Sunday at 18:30pm with a home league match against Budapest Honved.
