Videoton were in Europa league action in Switzerland on Thursday evening
The 4th match of Group G was played out on Thursday evening in Basel, Switzerland. The home side had done very well to defeat Manchester United 2-1 last season, in the Champions League group stages, so the task in hand was a big one for Videoton. However, Vidi were in good spirits, thanks mainly to the recent great form, which included the good 2-1 home success over Basel in the earlier group match.
Basel manager Murat Yakin had promised in the earlier press conference, that his side would go out to attack the opponents from the very first minute. The home side began the game playing patiently waiting for any cracks to appear in the visitors defence. You could not sense with the Basel players, that they had to win at all cost. The crowd inside the St Jakub stadium, which included 400 Hungarian supporters, did not have to wait too long for the first chance to arrive. That came in the 8th minute from the head of Schar, which required a fantastic reflex save from Bozsovics, in the Videoton goal, who would go on to be the star of the evening. Basel continued to play enjoying more possession over the following 15 minutes.
Another great save from the giant Montengro keeper, saw him keep put Streller's header after 23 minutes. Vidi broke out in the 27th minute with Oliveira, who saw the keeper off his line, before sending a high and hopeful shot just over from all of 40 meters. Alexander Frei, who was back in the starting line up, was next to test Videoton five minutes later. He found himself with just Bozsovics to beat in front of goal, but another outstanding save kept Videoton in the game. Oliveira did well to find Torghelle after 40 minutes, but Sommer in the home goal dealt well with his effort. The Videoton fans were backing their side all the way and it certainly helped Vidi in this group stage match.
There were no changes at the break from either side, but the pattern of play changed only by the fact that the home side had fewer chances in front of goal. Brachi sent a powerful free kick from distance in the 62nd minute, while Gyurcso crossed from the right, two minutes later, which Torghelle connected with, but Sommer was standing in the right place to deal with it. Streller then found himself with a good chance, but he finished badly when he should really have done better.
It began to look as if Vidi could achieve what Manchester United and Bayern Munich failed to do, which was to come away from Basel with a point. However, hearts were broken with 10 minutes left when substitute Salah found Streller with a neat pass, who held off the defender to hit home past Bozsovics. There were no more chances of note in the remaining minutes of the game, with the home win meaning Basel closed the gap on Videoton to just a point, with two games left in the group.
KRC Genk will be the next visitors at the Sostoi stadium on the 22nd November, while FC Basel entertain Sporting in the other game. Streller, who scored the games only goal, picked up a yellow during the match, which means that he will not feature against Sporting.
