Videoton gain first leg advantage

Gyorgy Mezey would have been pleased with the outcome of this Hungarian cup semi-final, first leg win. A first half goal from defender and captain, Zoltan Liptak was enough to pick up an important win, as Vidi attempt to make it a league and cup double.

Videoton did the hard work by securing a single goal win away at Kaposvar on Wednesday evening. A single goal from defender Zoltan Liptak, deep into time added on at the end of the first half, proved enough. Kaposvar were never going to make things easy for the red and blues. Tibor Sisa's side have had a wonderful season so far, and the fact that they occupy third place confirms this. In truth, it was not a spectacle of a game, as Vidi lined up without their regular strike pairing of Andre Alves and Laszlo Lencse. Alves was named as a substitute, with Nemanja Nikolics given a run out. Akos Elek picked up a yellow card in the first half, and manager Gyorgy Mezey decided not to risk his key midfielder getting sent off, which is why he was replaced at the break by Balazs Farkas. Football can be a funny game sometimes, and it was Farkas who received his marching orders, following a challenge from behind, which referee Fabian judged to warrant a red card. 

The goal itself summed up the match. A ball from the right was caught by Kaposvar keeper Kovacs, but he spilled the ball, and Liptak was well placed to score from close range to give Vidi a lead, they would go on to defend. There were other chances in the game, with Liptak's fellow central defender, Tamas Vasko seeing his glancing header parried by Kovacs. Bozsovics did well when called upon, but today's game was not one of his busiest. The 1-0 win means that Vidi are now well placed for the return leg in a fortnight's time, with the winners likely to face Kecskemet in the final, following their 5-1 home win over ZTE on Tuesday evening.
