Friendly 1-1 draw against Újpest

We equalised with a header from Bartusz in the first half, and after the break several of our young players were given a chance to play in the behind-closed-doors friendly against the Budapest side.

Early on Saturday afternoon, we hosted Újpest FC, currently fourth in the NB I, in a friendly behind closed doors game. Head coach Tamás Pető fielded the following starting line-up: Vas – Kovács K., Köllő, Spandler, Kurdics – Nagy Do., Derekas, Murka, Bedi – Németh D., Bartusz, whilst Krisztián Németh, a talented player from our U19 side, took his place on the bench.

The first chance of the match fell to the visitors: following a cross from Zeke, Tijani shot wide. By the 5th minute, we were already posing a threat: Dániel Németh played in Bartusz, who had made a good run down the wing; but his shot was saved by Szappanos, and the rebound was cleared by the Újpest defenders. At the other end, Vas also denied Ljujic and Tijani, but Újpest took the lead in the 15th minute: Amenyido headed a cross from the wing into our net (0–1).

We weren’t behind for long. In the 17th minute, Bedi headed Krisztián Kovács’s cross wide, but three minutes later we equalised: Bedi delivered a good cross to Bartusz, who burst into the penalty area and headed the ball into the net (1–1). In the 23rd minute, Vas parried Bodnár’s shot for a corner, then Dániel Németh’s long-range effort was deflected by a visiting defender. In the closing stages of the first half, following a cross from Krisztián Kovács, Derekas’s header went just wide of the goal, so the teams went into the break with the score at 1–1.

For the second half, Erik Kovács – returning from the U18 national team and top scorer at the Stevan Vilotić International Memorial Tournament – came on in place of Bartusz. The visitors threatened first through Ljujic, but his shot towards the centre was easily saved by Vas. In the 60th minute, we made three substitutions: Hársfalvi, Kojnok and Krisztián Németh – making his first-team debut – came on in place of Vas, Krisztián Kovács and Dominik Nagy. Shortly afterwards, Hársfalvi tipped Maier’s shot away for a corner, and our goalkeeper then confidently saved Szendrei’s free-kick from a good position.

In the 73rd minute, Erik Kovács pounced on a poor pass from Újpest, but his shot was blocked by the defenders. In the closing stages, Tamás Pető gave further opportunities to some of the younger players: Ekbauer, Menyhárt and Dániel Nagy came on, whilst Dominik Kovács, Hesz and Kelemen also took to the pitch. In the 87th minute, a long-range shot from Dominik Kovács forced Banai into action, and he punched the ball clear. There were no further goals, so our friendly against Újpest FC ended in a 1–1 draw.
