The past and the present

4-4-2 magazine looks back at the last time Videoton were successful in Europe

"It is true to say that the supporters were not climbing up the floodlight pylons, and although there were more than 11,000, which is not more than when 30,000 sang together in the Sostoi; the foreign players played the main role, and not the Hungarians. However, the crowd shouted out "well done boys!" just like 27-28 years ago, and then it was not known as the Europa League, and there were no group stages, with teams needing to go through on a round-by-round basis, and not via a group. It is also true to say that back in those days, there were no VIP suites, but everyone made there way to the stadium. Teams such as Dukla Prague, Paris Saint-Germain, Partizan Beograd, Manchester United, Zseljeznicsar, Real Madrid, and then; Slovan Bratislava, Gent, Trabzonspor, Sporting Lisbon, Basel, Genk, now;

It is also true that the set up is different, and things are more upbeat: while the old office building at the stadium no longer exists, with a new club building in its place; it is also true that the present team is far away with the old side, but the penalty shootout against the Turks, was won in the same way, than when Vidi progressed against Manchester United. In that match, Vadasz sent the stadium into raptures, while Mitrovics did the same most recently. Back then it was Ferenc Kovacs who got the praise, while now it is Paulo Sousa. It is true that the semi finals are very far away at the moment, but it still feels good to write down, three decades later... "Come on Vidi."
