A late Perics double makes it a nice end to the season

The season came to an end in the sunshine of Budapest on Sunday afternoon. The Ferenc Zsuzsa stadium was the scene for the final league game of the 2011-12 season. There wasn't really much resting on the game, except for the fact that Vidi striker Nemanja Nikolics was trying to end up as the league's top goalscorer. He needed to score in the game to go level with Debrecen's Adamo Coulibaly. Vidi were also looking to make it 13 wins out of the 15 spring league games, which was an amazing achievement. Paulo Sousa made several changes to his starting line up, giving some players the chance to show what they could do in league football.

Vidi kicked off the match putting the home side under pressure early on. A fourth minute free kick on the right of the box from debutant Uros Nikolics, saw the young Serbian midfielder send in a dangerous inswinger, which almost ended with Ujpest defender Mihajlovic scoring an own goal, with the ball hitting the post. Oliveira just failed to connect with the rebound as the home goal escaped early danger.

Things got even worse on 18 minutes when defender Marco Caneira was sent off. He went in hard on Ujpest midfielder Eninful on the half way line, and referee Bognar produced a red card. Ujpest failed to make use of their man advantage, with Mitrovics stepping back to central defence, with Uros Nikolics and Oliveria in the centre of midfield. Both sides found it hard to create chances on a very bad pitch, but the first half did have it's talking points to keep things interesting.

The game did not change too much in the second half, with Ujpest enjoying more of the possession early on. However, Ujpest forward Rajczi was struggling to have any effect upfront, being well marshalled by the Vidi backline. Referee Bognar then sent off Ujpest left back Pollack, after the defender was shown his second yellow card. Attila Polonkai came on after 72 minutes following a lengthy injury in a frustrating season. Gyurcso then escaped down the right shortly after before sending in a cross, which Kovacs shot straight at goal, but it took a deflection off a home defender to go out for a corner. Mitrovics curled a free kick into the box three minutes later, with Nikolics heading his effort over the crossbar.

It was the icing on the cake for a very good spring season, with 13 wins from 15 league games, securing second place with 66 points. It was also the highest ever points tally from a Videoton side since the introduction of 3 points for a win. There can be no doubt that it has been a good season for the boys in red and blue, as they also won both the super cup and the league cup. In the end Nikolics just failed to equal Coulibaly to become the top league goalscorer, but that was the only frustrating aspect of the afternoon.
