MOL Fehervar FC suffered a 2-0 first leg defeat on Wednesday. They will be looking to overturn this next week and go through to the last four.
The first leg of the Hungarian Cup quarter-finals took place on Wednesday. Vidi travelled west to face Zalaegerszeg having recently beaten them in the OTP league. The two met seven years ago in the Cup when ZTE were a second division side. It was Vidi who comfortably went through back then over two legs.
The game started with a weak low shot from ZTE player Babati after 3 minutes. Forward Ikoba also tested Kovacsik in the opening minutes with a powerful shot, which the Vidi keeper saved confidently. Nego at the other end could not find the target following a big chance a couple of minutes later. The action continued in the first half with Ikopa receiving a good ball from Babati, but Kovacsik was alert and managed to clear with his feet.
There was 24 minutes on the clock when Hodzic showed good skill with a neat dribble before cutting in and shooting straight at the home keeper Demjen, who punched it clear. Moments later and Demjen was again alert to deny a rebound off Janos Szepe from going under the crossbar. The keeper managed to tip the ball over. Vidi went close to opening the score after 36 minutes. Nego struck the left post following a curling effort from 8 meters. Demjen again did well to save from Milanov close on half time.
The second half kicked off with a chance for Ikoba. The forward shot just over the bar from 15 meters. ZTE were more active in the second period. Manager Joan Carrillo reacted to change things after 63 minutes: Futacs replaced Nikolov while Houri came on for Nego. There was less action in front of both goals compared to the first half. The first serious chance of the second half arrived after 76 minutes. Hodzic cut inside and shot at goal from 15 meters but again Demjen was in the right place to deny him.
ZTE manager Gabor Marton sent on 19 year old Oliver Hegedus after 81 minutes. He had only appeared twice in their first team as a sub before today. Both of those were in cup games against lower league opponents. It was the youngster who centred three minutes later for Ikoba to rise and head into the corner of the net to break the deadlock and make it 1-0. ZTE extended their lead on 88 minutes with Ikoba this time returning the favour and providing an assist for Hegedus to score to make it 2-0.
The two sides will meet next week at the MOL Arena Sosto in the second leg.
