Match Report: Win over MTK and just a point behind leaders Vasas

Two second half Danko Lazovics goals gave Videoton three points at Felcsut.

The final home league match of 2016 was played out on Saturday evening against MTK. League leaders Vasas had suffered a 2-1 defeat at the home of Honved in the afternoon while Ferencvaros defeated Gyirmot 2-0. That resulted in Vidi slipping down to 4th in the table at the time of kick off. Director of Football, Zoltan Kovacs handed over a gift to Roland Juhasz before the game. The experienced player had recently retired from a very impressive international career.

There were no serious chances of note in the opening 15 minutes of the game. That changed when Lazovics curled a 25 meter shot at goal, which was confidently saved by Petkovic in the visiting goal. A good pass by Scepovics found Lazovics, who again was dangerous for the MTK defence, but this time the MTK keeper emerged the better. MTK went close on 21 minutes when Vogyicska sent his 16 meters shot just wide of the target. The action continued as Videoton tried hard to find the breakthrough.

There was thirty minutes on the clock when Lazovics curled his free kick against the post, and the rebound fell to Juhasz who headed over the bar. There were no further chances in the first period, but the first 45 minutes produced six yellow cards as match official Farkas kept himself busy.

The half time break saw Henning Berg make a change to his side. Kovacs came on for Feczesin as the teams ran out for the second half. The first half of the second period was fairly quiet with plenty of good battles going on around the pitch. Scepovics sent his header on 65 minutes over the bar in what was the first effort of the second half. Geresi then saw his shot go wide just 3 minutes later. Kovacsik was quick to deal with a Torghelle header at the other end. The breakthrough finally arrived after 70 minutes. It was also a very nice goal with the ball finding Scepovics, and the forward flicked the ball back into the path of Lazovics, who volleyed the ball into the back of the visitors net (1-0).

Juhasz had a header saved by the MTK keeper after 83 minutes, while the game was finally settled after 90 minutes: Scepovics collected the ball inside the MTK half, and he played Lazovics through on goal, with the forward shooting hard and the ball flew into the bottom right hand corner with Petkovic well beaten (2-0)!

The 2-0 win means that Videoton are just a point behind leaders Vasas. Videoton will travel to Debrecen on the 3rd December sitting in second place.
