Videoton win the Hungarian Super Cup

Videoton FC held their nerves to win the Hungarian Super Cup on Wednesday evening in Szekesfehervar. Storm clouds had gathered around the Sostoi stadium leading upto the match, following a long heatwave, which has been in Hungary for a lengthy period. Those clouds disappeared by the time the match began, only to return and make things very hard for both teams. Vidi's win means that they have picked up the trophy for the second year running.

Videoton quickly sorted themselves out following that early setback, going on to have a bigger impact in the cup final. Adam Gyurcso was looking good on the right side of midfield, with his pace always causing problems. His crosses from both sides, together with his corners were testing Novakovics and his defenders. Referee Bognar was finding it hard to control the match in the first period with tackles going in and not always being punished. There were several moments when a yellow card should have been produced, but for some reason was not. He made up for this by handing out seven bookings, with five of those going to Debrecen, in an eventful second half.

A 34th minute free kick from Korhut ended at Coulibaly, who found the back of the net, only to be flagged for offside. Torghelle then got hold of the ball a minute later on the edge of the box, before turning his defender and shooting from an angle at the keeper. Sandor sent a high ball over in the 38th minute, which fell nicely to defender Vinicius, whose effort hit the foot of the post, before trying to score from the rebound, which was eventually collected by Novakovics. Torghelle then flicked Szolnoki's cross on 43 minutes wide, as Videoton continued to press. The final effort of the first half came from a Gyurcso free kick, which he curled in to the side netting. Debrecen were defending in numbers to protect their early lead, and went in at half time 1-0 up.

Istvan Kovacs replaced Balazs Toth at the break, while the visitors made no changes to their original starting line up. The second half began with another disallowed goal, when Szakaly was judged to have kicked Bozsovics' hand, and despite the ball ending up in the goal, match official Bognar ruled against Debrecen, awarding Vidi a free kick. There were several battles going on around the pitch, as both sides tried to gain the upper hand. There was a pleasing moment when Alvaro Brachi returned to first team action as a 56th minute substitute, following a lengthy period out injured. Vidi stepped up the pressure further, with first Gyurcso crossing the ball in front of the Debrecen goalmouth, before it was cleared by a defender. Novakovics then dealt with a dangerous Walter cross as the pressure continued. The rain began to come down, which influenced the game, making it hard to play good passing football. The gathering storms looked threatening around the Sostoi stadium, but the pitch held up well. Vidi then levelled the match on 72 minutes. Torghelle found room inside the box to shoot at goal, but his effort was parried by the keeper, and the alert Kovacs was on hand to touch home the rebound.

The rules going in to the match meant that there would be no extra time in the event of a draw, with the game going straight to a penalty shootout. It was probably the best decision as the continuing bad weather would have badly affected another thirty minutes of football. Videoton managed to convert all of their penalty kicks, with Nikolics taking the first successful one. Mitrovics also kept his nerve, as did Gyurcso who hit a powerful penalty in to the corner of the net. Brachi also found the target before Bodi hit his spot kick high over the bar. That resulted in Caneira having the task of scoring to clinch the Super Cup for the red and blues. He did just that and Videoton emerged 5-3 winners.
