DEPARTURE

Tamás Pető is no longer Vidi manager

We have terminated the contract with our head coach, Tamás Pető, by mutual agreement.

Tamás Pető is stepping down from his position as head coach of our team by mutual agreement. The 52-year-old returned to Székesfehérvár in November 2025, taking charge of our team whilst they were in 12th place. Under his leadership, our side climbed to 6th place in the table during the spring, and we ultimately finished the 2025/2026 season in 8th place. At the start of the 2026/2027 season, we were in 3rd place with 6 points after three rounds; however, due to a run of poor results in recent weeks, we have slipped back to 10th place in the table. Under his management, our team’s record in NB II was 11 wins, 5 draws and 12 defeats from 28 league matches.

Our sporting director, Nemanja Nikolics, spoke to our website about the background to the decision:

“A year ago, Tamás Pető took over at Videoton FC Fehérvár in an extremely difficult situation. At the time, our team was very close to the relegation zone in the league, and Tamás’s primary task was to stabilise the team’s position, help the players regain their confidence, and start climbing the table. Thanks to our strong performances in the spring season, we managed to move out of the relegation zone and ultimately secured a stable position in mid-table. This result, together with the professional work carried out, clearly justified Tamás Pető being offered a new contract so that he could continue the work he had begun.

In football, however, results are the most important measure of performance, and we are well aware that our recent performances have fallen short of both our own expectations and those of our supporters. At the same time, I would like to share a few things that supporters may not necessarily see from the stands. After all, supporters only see the team at the weekend matches, and it is entirely natural that they judge the team’s performance based on what they see there. As sporting director, however, I have been present at every training session over the past year, so I have been able to follow the day-to-day work of the coaching staff and the players at close hand. I can say with a clear conscience that the coaching work carried out in training was impeccable. I had no complaints whatsoever regarding the thoroughness of the preparation, the intensity of the training sessions, or the attitude and dedication of the coaching staff. Unfortunately, however, the high standard of work during the week has not been matched by the expected results this season. I believe that not a single opponent has outplayed us this season. We are among the league’s best when it comes to creating chances, but when it comes to converting them, we fall far short of the standard required for a successful season. Of course, we cannot ignore the fact that we lost several matches in the final minute. To be honest, it is difficult to find an explanation for this.

All this shows that, whilst our coaching work and certain aspects of our play provided a solid foundation, something was still missing for all this to translate into results. In football, ultimately, what matters is not how many chances we create or how well we train during the week, but how much of that we can demonstrate in matches and how many points we pick up. I do not wish to make excuses, nor do I wish to shift the blame onto any one person. We are all jointly responsible for the situation that has arisen, and we must all look deep within ourselves to see what we could have done differently. However, there is one thing I feel it is particularly important to emphasise: over the past year, Tamás Pető has done everything in his power to ensure that Vidi returns to the very top of Hungarian football. For him, this meant achieving success with a club from which he received so much, first as a player and later as a member of the coaching staff. He knows the club’s history, its traditions and what Vidi means to the supporters.

That is precisely why the current situation pains Tamás just as much as it does all of us who work day in, day out to ensure that Vidi regains its rightful place. Having jointly assessed the experiences of recent times and the team’s current situation, we have ultimately reached the decision to part ways by mutual agreement.

This is not an easy decision, and it in no way implies that the work of the past year is being called into question. Tamás Pető himself feels that, in the current situation, the best way he can help Videoton is by stepping down, so that the team can gain fresh impetus and new momentum. In football, it sometimes happens that even work carried out with integrity and to a high professional standard does not yield the hoped-for results. However, we all now recognise that change may be the next step. I would like to thank Tamás Pető for his work over the past year, for his dedication, his loyalty to the club, and for doing everything he could to ensure Videoton’s success, even during the most difficult times. I wish Tamás every success in his future career!”
