The two managers gave their reactions to the media following the final whistle.
Marko Nikolic:
"I feel that the supporters saw a very good game today, played at a good tempo throughout. The 90 minutes was not like a summer match, but rather like both teams playing a league game in the middle of the season. We had chances and scored at a good time and battled until the end. Girondins are a quality side with good players. They have good wingers that have pace and a technical knowledge. I am never pleased for a defeat, but this is not a bad result for us. This was the first defeat for me and my coaching team on the Vidi bench, but if I look at just myself, then this is the first game I have lost after 44 or 45 matches, but despite this, I would like to congratulate my team. Each of my players put in a good performance. For the first goal, we simply had to kick the ball out and the situation is finished. We had 3-4 chances to do this but did not manage it. The second goal.... We had a free kick and should not have given them the chance to counter attack us. In short, we conceded naive goals and know where we need to still improve. At the end of the game and in the final 10-15 minutes, I felt that fitness wise we are ahead of Bordeaux. We felt that we had the chance to score, which is why we had that many forwards on the pitch at the end. We had Lazovic, Henty, Maric, Suljic, Hadzic and full backs Stopira and Nego... so we did try but could not score the second goal. I believe that we have the chance to go through in the second leg and I would give each side 50% to be in the next round."
Jocelyn Gourvennec:
"We started the season with a win, which I am pleased about. However, we conceded a goal at home. The Hungarian team, as we could see, were prepared for the game and it was their seventh competitive match this season. We can regret the fact that we were not more exact in the first half and felt we had a further two goals in us. This was expected in what was our first game of the season that we would not be that precise. Videoton FC are a very good side and were organised. It is not at all easy to play against them and it was a difficult match. We are going to Hungary to win and will do everything to make it into the next round. Sankhare played very well today and scored an important goal.”
