Goal fiesta in the fight for second place

Great action, good goals and a very good evening for Videoton at the Pancho Arena.

Videoton and MTK met at the Pancho Arena on Saturday evening in a game that saw second against third in the OTP league table. A win for Videoton would see them up to second and take a big step towards European football in the summer. As part of the European football week, MSOSZ prepared special shirts for the young kids to come out with the players.

The game started really well for the home team and the breakthrough arrived quickly. Nego brought Stopira into play on 5 minutes, who sent in a very good curling ball from the left in front of goal, which Nego rose unmarked to head home (1-0). A rather unusual goal then doubled the lead for the red and blues. With 9 minutes on the clock, Suljic ran down the right before shooting at goal, but the ball came off the head of Hegedus and rebounded into the back of the MTK net - own goal! (2-0).

The action continued and Oliveira turned his marker inside out on 23 minutes, on the edge of the box, and then lifted the ball in front of goal, with Tischler just failing to connect. MTK were then reduced to 10 men when Torghelle fouled Simon from behind, and the visiting forward was shown a straight red by referee Sandor.

Tischler had possession inside the visiting penalty area after 32 minutes, and he wanted to pass but a defender slid in with a challenge, and the match official waved play on. A powerful shot from a Tischler free kick, four minutes later, went wide of the left post. Danilovics required treatment close to the end of the first half, but the injury was not serious and he was able to continue.

The second half started with a long range effort from Nego, before Patkai also tried his luck from 22 meters, but the ball fell in to the arms of keeper Hegedus. The MTK keeper was helpless on 64 minutes. Another free kick from outside the box ended with Tischler scoring a great goal. His strike from 25 meters gave Hegedus no chance. (3-0).

The Videoton supporters were back on their feet 2 minutes later as Vidi made it four. Suljic received a good ball, and then ran alone towards Hegedus, who had no answer for the trickery of the Bosnian, who calmly rounded the goalkeeper and slid the ball home. (4-0).

The action continued to come thick and fast in what was one of the best games of the season for the watching supporters. Nego escaped down the right on 73 minutes, and then saw his shot take a slight deflection off a defender, which produced a good save from the keeper. Substitute Geresi then fed Nego with a lovely ball 10 minutes later. Nego showed good pace to nicely place the ball wide of Hegedus and into the back of the visiting net. 5-0.

The referee blew for full time and Videoton ran out 5-0 winners to overtake MTK and move into second. Both Debrecen and Haladas managed to win, so the battle for Europa league places continues into the final week. There are four teams (Videoton, MTK, Debrecen and Haladas), battling for second, third and fourth place. Videoton travel to the home of Ujpest, next Saturday, with everything to play for.
